Imagine coming from a family of five Olympic athletes, all in flat-water kayaking or canoeing: trained to win and sometimes to hate in order to win.

This book is about my inner journey from national-team athlete, to ordained Buddhist nun, to simply day-to-day living. It is a journey fuelled by universal compassion and the vast healing power of the mind and stories of people who experienced inspired healing using four key methods described in the book.

It begins with a spiritual opening sparked by a movie about the hidden Himalayan valley of Shangri-la and then a deepening of inner listening and understanding at the cooperative spiritual community of Findhorn in Scotland. There, I learned from spiritual pioneers on the cutting edge of change.

Deepening insight

After witnessing my mother's death in a car accident and then my husband's heart attack, I spent seven years as an ordained Tibetan Buddhist nun, taking the name "Dekyi" - dekyi meaning happiness, bliss. By studying at the feet of great masters and yogis who had fled Tibet, including the Dalai Lama's personal physician, I gained a deepened understanding of the essential wisdom that underlies the healing process, strengthened by personal advice from His Holiness.

I also discovered a more expansive compassion, one which thrives the more one is engaged. And a most unexpected breakthrough: what we think is happening is quite often the very opposite of what is actually spiritually unfolding.

This is a journey of integration resulting in confidence and inner strength and ultimate healing.

When my father broke his neck in a car accident, I returned home to Canada to be with him, leaving behind my nun's robes. I brought with me, four simple keys to self-healing which I shared with the local community.

A global challenge

You will read inspiring stories of everyday adults, teens, kids and elders who used these simple, yet profound methods to deal with their problems, trauma, abuse, illness and loss by accessing the most inspired source within themselves, shifting them into new paradigms and life paths, and empowering them to help others in turn. Many are now leading the way with renewed purpose and life force.

I have been running courses in seven countries and training professionals in health, social services, education and medicine for 20 years. Free exercises in four languages are offered on my websites www.transformativemindfulness.com and www.lamponthepath.org. This book will be supported by online courses, training and teleconferenced support groups.

After you vote for this book, I would like to thank you with a MP3 audio download of one of the key exercises in English and print version in French, Spanish and Italian.

Carmen speaks about Dekyi-Lee and her methods

These methods got me out of the house! It's like been young again...transforming the ravages of time. After a long illness, my body was depleted and I became a house recluse. Side effects from the medications were powerful and internal bleeding got me once to death's door. Exhaustion, chronic fatigue, pain and being unable to rest I was diagnosed as having a sleep disorder, my brain not been able to enter REM.

All that has changed now. Can you imagine an easy technique - a beautiful and meaningful journey that actually could do that?

Well, that is what Dekyi Lee Oldershaw offered me with her transformative methods, which she calls Transformative Mindfulness. And it worked. I have seen myself change, and I have rejoiced with the change that I have witnessed in other people that have participated in sessions guided by Dekyi Lee.

I sleep well and dream again. No doctor was able to fix that. My body is not black and blue and my appearance has improved in such a way, that people have to look at me twice.

Her simple, profound methods did that. I am now involved in numerous very creative projects.

The 16 Guidelines book co-authored by Dekyi-Lee Oldershaw is not just a self-help book with limited scope. It is more than that. Much more! Anyone who has a little compassion and understanding can use the principles outlined in it to help others, friends, family and work or schoolmates. It works by giving skilful means by which to have constructive dialogue in pairs or groups about basic values, common to all of us. In this way it is an extremely vauable tool for education for all ages and inclinations. Bravo to Dekyi-Lee and co-autor Alison Murdoch!

i worked through the excercises in 16 guidelines and as an individual found them very effective.as an indigenous person who has had opportunity to attend a training workshop with dekyi lee, it is beautiful to see univerality reach across the divide often created by colonialism.

What I most value and appreciate about Dekyi-Lee Oldershaw is that she definitely does practice what she preaches. She herself is the walking proof that her methods produce the results her book promises.

Good Luck Dekyi-Li. I know that you would like to fullfill Lama Zopa's wish to bring this book to many, many people. You always were a sincere, transformative educator, when I knew you at Eudlo in Australia. You were a stunning artist too. Best Wishes.
