In The Shaman Chef: My Life and other Recipes, Renee Baribeau tells how she overcame emotional neglect, abuse, addiction, and chronic depression by creating life-sustaining rituals based on her own intuition and teachings from various spiritual traditions.
As the child of a violently angry alchoholic father from a poverty-stricken background, and a repressed and co-dependent mother, Renee had to find her way in the world with little wisdom or guidance from her elders. Even though she earned a college scholarship, graduated with honors, became a property owner at the age of twenty-two and a business owner the following year, those successes were never enough to counteract the crippling depression that dogged her steps from a young age. It was only the discovery of her natural gift and affinity for cooking that saved her from an early death with drugs and alcohol. When that skill deserted her she had to find a new menu for survival and she was successful in that search.
Today, Rene is free from the constraints of her lifelong mood disorders. She enjoys being awake and fully present in the Now moment of her life and is devoted to encouraging others to find their own rituals for healing and recipes for living. This memoir, a bountiful mélange of memories sandwiched between mouthwatering recipes and uplifting rituals offers a look at how you can play a significant role in bringing about your own emotional well-being.

Author(s) Bio
Renee Baribeau: Bio for Renee Baribeau, The Shaman Chef
Overview. A Mapuche Shaman who gave me the name of Tresunko (the sound between passing things) once told me I was Good for Working. She was more right than she could have known. I have been one of the hardest working people I know since the age of seven when I started shoveling snow to earn pocket money.
I put myself through college with scholarships and jobs and, when I found that I had a gift for cooking, I shouldered my way into the 5-star kitchens of Manhattan. I have spent over 25 years in the kitchen and while I no longer cook full time, I wear the badge of Executive chef with honor, proud to have earned it by working the 14 hour days, six-day weeks that one must in order to deserve the toque.
Education. I graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Communication and a minor in Philosophy from the University of Southern Maine. I apprenticed at the NY Restaurant School where I learned at the apron strings of several world-class chef.
Experience. While in my twenties, I opened, owned and operated a Fresh Market Cuisine Restaurant in Syracuse and earned positive reviews from Canada to New Jersey. During this time I also had a show on Cable TV called Cooking with Renee.
When I closed down the restaurant, I continued in the hospitality industry working as a hotel and country club manager. Before I left these jobs to strike out on my own again, I went back to college studying graphic design and video production.
Experience in Public Relations and Marketing. Throughout my life I have been told that I could sell ice to an Eskimo. I began selling Girl Scout Cookies door to door when I was seven and by age eleven I had a sales table in the schools cafeteria. That was about the same time that I discovered that I loved to ski, but could not afford it unless I could figure out a way to subsidize my hobby. I began to organize and run ski trips to Vermont. They were quite successful until someone caught on to the fact that there was no adult accompanying these groups of seventh graders on their junkets.
I am presently the director and owner of the Desert Holistic Health Network organization and online resource directory in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area. About two years ago, I got a call from the internationally famous We-Care health spa. The owner, who had been given my name by the dean of the Healing the Light Body School in Peru, asked me to come and share my healing work with others and I have been doing so publicly since that time.

I watched the video presentation, read the excerpt, read the book proposal and even read all the comments. Why? I knew nothing of Renee Barbeau and was hungry for more! Though I have over 2300 friends on FaceBook, I really don't know most of them; and Renee is one of those unknown friends. Many have asked for my vote. I have voted for many, however not all whom ask. Before I vote for anyone, I watch their video and I at least read their excerpt. I have only written a comment for one other contestant in this competition.
The bottom line? I love the spirit, vulnerability, humor and turn of the phrase that is Renee Baribeau's writing style. As a gourmet cook, I can't wait to try the recipes Renee so generously gifts in her excerpt. After reading the book proposal, I can't wait to buy the book for even more delicious sounding recipes from her pantry.
Not only did her excerpt and proposal resonate with me because of her difficult journey, but I also love the title of the book and all the chapter titles! Renee is exceedingly creative with words and with her recipes. Renee's story is fascinating, and she writes beautifully. This is truly a really good read!
In addition, Renee has the know-how, the determination and the tenacity to work hard at the business end of selling her book. This is a necessity in today's market in order to insure that one's book becomes a best seller. And, I believe it is crucial for the winner of this contest to have enough faith in their Self to get out there and market their book! Publishers do not do all the marketing necessary to make a new author a best seller. Publishers do a lot, thank God; however, the author has to put forth a lot of self-initiative and effort to help in the process of making their book a best seller. I believe Renee Baribeau is fully capable of doing this!
Whether I win or lose the prize she is offering (I want the four Shamanic coaching sessions AND the dinner for eight -- LOL), I want to wish the very talented Renee Baribeau godspeed on her journey.
I will buy this book.
With gratitude,
Rev. Kriss Siler
